New edition of ‘Where There Are No Pharmacists’ includes ORS and Zinc for diarrhoea treatment

Where There Are No Pharmacists coverWhere There Are No Pharmacists is a guide to managing medicines for all health workers. It was first published in 2009.

Where there are no trained pharmacists serving communities, other categories of health workers are called upon to order, buy, store, dispense and advise people on rational use of medicines.

Where There Are No Pharmacists explains how to order them, store them, prepare them, dispense them and use them safely and effectively – it is about managing medicines. Information to help communities benefit from the use of medicines is also included.

After ten years, the second edition has just been published and it includes an expanded section on the use of zinc with oral rehydration salts (ORS) for diarrhoea in children.

ColaLife has had no direct role in achieving this but this is the first concrete example of the trickle-down effect that we expect from our work to get co-packaged ORS and Zinc added to the WHO Essential Medicines List.

Where There Are No Pharmacists is published by the Third World Network (TWN) and Health Action International. There are more details about it here and it can be ordered online from the TWN Bookshop.
