She said We can distribute Coca Cola all around the World but we can’t seem to get medication to save a child from something as simple as diarrhoea and I think that that is wrong. At this point I decided my blog post wasn’t going to be enough! I decided to set up a Facebook group to get people behind the idea.
  • 6-14/5/08 I was in communication with Coca-Cola but could not get past the first line in Coca-Cola’s CSR department
  • After the blog post I tried to get the idea debated on the BBC Radio 4 iPM programme. I was successful on the 3rd attempt and after getting friends to support the idea on the iPM blog (see below).
  • 6/5/08 I decided to blog the idea and then follow-up by trying to get Coca-Cola’s attention. The blog post is here.
  • 6/5/08 The presence of Coca-Cola’s Chief Executive at the Business Call To Action event re-kindled the idea. I contributed to the online blog saying: What about Coca Cola using their
distribution channels (which are amazing in developing countries) to distribute rehydration salts? Maybe by dedicating one compartment in every 10 crates as ‘the life saving’ compartment?’
    (original live blog available here)

May 1988 – May 2008 – the first 7,305 days – no progress!

  • May 1988 Had the idea while working on the British Aid Programme in NE Zambia that Coca-Cola’s distribution muscle could be used to distribute oral rehydration salts in developing countries
  • I tried to promote the idea but made no progress at all!

David Berman on ColaLife

When putting together The ColaLife Channel I came across this interview with David Berman author of Do Good Design. Kate Andrews hooked us up at the beginning of the year when David’s book was published. In the interview David talks about ColaLife. The link is that on page 40 of his book in the chapter entitled ‘Pop Landscape’ David says:

Imagine what would be possible if The Coca-Cola Company’s uncommonly efficient distribution system in Africa could be harnessed to deliver health information, medicine, and condoms, in addition to caffeinated sugar water.

He hadn’t come across ColaLife at this point. David has been on a World Tour promoting his book which has just been translated into Chinese. He has been using ColaLife as a case study of “what others do while I rant”! The second edition of the book will mention ColaLife.

Cheers David.

Other big names and ColaLife.

More ColaLife Serendipity and Web 2.0 Magic

My co-administrator of the ColaLife Facebook Group, writer, tipster and networker extraordinaire, Kate Andrews, invited me to join a Flickr Group. It was the Do Good Design group set up to support the micro-site supporting David Berman’s recently published book. So I joined the group and I posted the aidpod picture above.

This intrigued David and he left a comment. Kate answered and pointed David to the ColaLife website and this afternoon David and I spoke on Skype – he’s in Canada.

Here’s the serendipitous bit. Chapter 3 of David’s book is titled ‘Pop landscape’. Around the time I was setting up the ColaLife Group, he was writing:

Imagine what would be possible if The Coca-Cola Company’s uncommonly efficient distribution system in Africa could be harnessed to deliver health information, medicine, and condoms, in addition to caffeinated sugar water.
[Page 40, Do Good Design]

David and I only have 1 friend in common, Kate, so he will provide a gateway to a whole new network of people and introduce them to ColaLife and I guess I’m doing a similar sort of thing for his book!
:-)

Global Tolerance to host ColaLife meet-up – 16/12/08

The generous support for Colalife from Simon Cohen of Global Tolerance continues. Simon has offered to host a meet-up at their London headquarters for those us who can make it on 16 December, 6 – 9pm. This is particularly welcome as most of us have never met! Numbers will be limited to 20. The following people have already responded to announcements through the Google and Facebook Groups: Steve Bridger; Simon Berry; Ann Holmes; David Wilcox; Tessy Britton; Ian Crawford; Ellie Stoneley; Steve Dale, Simon Cohen and Kate Andrews. If you’d like to join us please comment on this blog item or email me at sxberry -at- gmail -dot- com. Numbers will be limited to 20.

The meeting will be informal and focus on ‘what next?’ By the time we meet we will have the outcomes of the meeting in Dar Es Salaam to consider.

Progress Report – 27/8/08

This photo was taken by Teseum – the original is here

I thought an update on the progress of the Coca Cola campaign so far would be helpful.

The first 7,305 days – no progress!
May 1988 – May 2008

  • May 1988 Had the idea while working on the British Aid Programme in NE Zambia that Coca-Cola’s distribution muscle could be used to distribute oral rehydration salts in developing countries
  • I tried to promote the idea but made no progress at all!

The last 120 days – real progress!
May 2008 onwards

Next moves

  • Planning for the next Business Call To Action meeting at the UN in New York on 25 September
  • Tracking the Coca-Cola research into their distribution network in east Africa
  • Encouraging the prospect of trials of the concept in east Africa before the end of 2008
  • Seeking engagement from a multi-national NGO
  • Encouraing ideas and contributions from members of the various groups (eg design of inserts for crates; educational and awareness raising materials; local logistics; grass-roots engagement etc etc)
  • On-going PR campaign to ensure support groups continue to grow
  • Event?

5,500 children die every day in Africa before the age of 5. This initiative could save thousands and thousands of children’s lives through positive engagement between the private and NGO sector.

First ColaLife Meet-up

Colalife cooks
The first ever face-to-face meeting of ColaLife took place on 14/8/08 in Nunhead, London. I kick myself for forgetting to take any pictures during the event so you’ll have to make do with this one. This is Jane, Emma and Andrew (in the background) – the cooks – and was taken as people were arriving. The conversation was then so continuous and interesting that the camera was forgotten about.

It was more ‘getting to know each other’ than ‘action-plan-focussed meeting’; more questions than answers. It was great for me to meet my co-admin on the Facebook Group, Kate Andrews, for the first time. Kate has had a huge impact with her writing and contacts which has reached people outside of Facebook.

It was also great to meet Ian Crawford who has also worked hard to promote the campaign. Ian provided a useful summary of those questions:

  • Can we get the RSA and more fellows involved?
  • Would it be beneficial to create a competition brief (e.g. RSA Design Directions / Design21 / Core 77)?
  • How can we use the Coke packaging itself, could it be altered to create a lifestraw for example?
  • How can we use the “negative” space that will be left in the crates?
  • What problem do we want to solve?
  • Where would the project be taking place?
  • What would we be sending – rehydration salts?
  • What doesn’t manage to get distributed successfully at the moment?
  • Should we look into hosting an event?
  • How can we get demographic data from the Facebook group and do we need to?
  • Should we work together with an NGO? Who?

Web 2.0′s Social Reporter, David Wilcox was also there. I’ve known David for more than a decade and we have done some really interesting projects together over the years, including this one. All the video associated with the ColaLife campaign, to date, has been done by David.

Dave Briggs had to attend to last minute family matters and so couldn’t be with us. Dave has written about the campaign on davepress.net and built this website for us.

We did decide that we now needed a workplan. Watch this space . . .

5th Facebook Newsletter – 6/7/08

6/7/08 – 5th Newsletter

Simon Berry sent a message to the members of Let’s talk to Coca Cola about saving the World’s children.

Subject: 5th Newsletter – Coca-Cola Rehydration Campaign

Dear All

Thank you all for your continued support to the campaign. Here is a summary of progress since the 4th Newsletter update.

1. NGO Support
Contact has been made with WaterAid and Oxfam, however neither are yet
to agree to engage with the campaign. It is going to be a challenge to
get an international NGO on board. However, through the Facebook Group
we have contact with some very senior people in both the aforementioned
organisations and these links are being followed. In the meantime NGO
research continues.

2. BBC iPM Interview
The BBC’s iPM Team contacted me for a follow-up interview. A video of the interview can be seen here: http://beamends.typepad.com/simons_blog/2008/07/a-video-of-the.html

3. Ethiopia and Tanzania Research
The research in Ethiopia and Tanzania has started and we have contact
with the frontline. A regular blog on this has been started here.
Please comment with any questions/clarifications you have:
http://beamends.typepad.com/simons_blog/cocacola_research/index.html

4. 2gether08 Festival
I gave a presentation at the 2gether08 event and this can be viewed here:
http://beamends.typepad.com/simons _blog/2008/07/workshop-presen.html

5. ColaLife Google Group
We have set up a Google Group to enable email-based discussions between members who want this. You can join the group here:
http://groups.google.com/group/colalife?hl=en

6. Facebook – Kate Andrews
Kate Andrews has volunteered to help with the management of the Facebook Group. Thanks Kate.

Finally, please do forward this email to your friends and ask them, please, to join the Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=18947780476 The continued growth of the group means we continue to make amazing progress.

Onwards and upwards

Simon
